Headstart transition program
Glebe Public School offers the Headstart transition program, which helps children become familiar with school before they start Kindergarten.
For more than 20 years, Headstart has supported children and families as they prepare for primary school.
The program includes:
- visits to the school to explore classrooms and playgrounds
- opportunities to meet teachers and future classmates
- a buddy system, pairing each new student with a Year 4 mentor
- a graduation ceremony to celebrate the transition to school
This program helps children build confidence and excitement about starting school
Our Kindergarten learning approach
Our Kindergarten program blends play-based learning with structured teaching to support both academic and social development.
Through play, storytelling, songs and hands-on activities, students develop:
- early reading and writing skills
- number and problem-solving skills

A typical Kindergarten day
A typical Kindergarten day may include:
- Literacy learning such as phonics, reading and writing
- Numeracy activities including counting and number recognition
- Developmental play and creative learning
- Movement and mindfulness activities
- Collaborative learning with classmates

Getting ready at home
You can help your child get ready by encouraging independence and routines. Try:
- packing and unpacking their school bag
- dressing themselves and practising hygiene
- following simple routines at home.

What to expect in Kindergarten
Learning and development
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
Daily routines
Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.
Best Start Assessment
At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
